Standardized Assessments at MNOHS

As a public charter high school, MNOHS is required by state law to administer standardized assessments at various points throughout the school year. 

These assessments primarily measure school and program performance rather than individual student achievement. Students do not receive a grade or "pass' or "fail" these tests. However, participating and doing your best can provide valuable information about your learning and may have benefits for future opportunities, including financial aid. 

Students who choose MNOHS as their district are required to participate in state-mandated and school-mandated assessments, with limited exceptions. MNOHS will provide information and reminders about assessments before they take place - keep an eye on your MNOHS communications. 

MCA - Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments

The MCA assessments are required standardized state tests in Reading, Math and Science used to evaluate how well students are learning Minnesota Academic Standards. 

Who takes the MCAs?

All comprehensive (full-time) 10th and 11th graders participate in MCAs. 

10th graders: Reading

11th graders: Math

10th and 11th graders that haven't taken the Science MCA take Science, usually the year they take Biology. 

Where? 

The MCA assessments can be taken in person at the MNOHS office in St. Paul, or at a few public locations across MN. There is no remote option available. 

When?

MCA assessments are administered each spring from March-May. More information will be sent to parents/guardians via email.

How long do the MCAs take?

Students will be given as much time as they need to complete their MCAs. Testing time depends on each individual student, but typically each MCA test takes approximately 1-3 hours. 

What does my student need to bring to testing?

Nothing! Just themselves. We will provide all necessary materials.

My student needs to take multiple MCA tests this year. Do they take them all in one day?

We usually recommend one MCA test per day. If you and your student feel confident that it will not negatively impact your student, we can schedule more than one per day.

Can my student drive themselves to testing?

Yes.

Does my student have to take the MCAs?

Yes. All 10th and 11th grade students are required to take the MCAs. As a parent/guardian, you have the right to opt your student out of MCA testing. If you choose to opt-out, you will need to download and complete this form: MCA Opt-out Form

STAR Assessments

The STAR assessments are standardized tests in Reading and Math used by MNOHS staff to better understand students' learning needs, to determine course placements, and spring tests are used to measure students' learning growth. 

Who takes the STAR assessments?

All MNOHS students.

Where? 

STAR assessments can be taken online at home with a parent or guardian present to act as a proctor. 

When?

Twice per year - once in the fall (or when a student starts at MNOHS) and again in the spring.

How long do the STAR assessments take?

They take about 20-30 minutes each, can be taken at any time during the testing windows, and can be stopped and restarted if needed. 

What does my student need to bring to testing?

Nothing! These assessments can be taken right on their computer. 


Student growth is reported as a percent of all students taking the STAR tests, so we never report names or other identifying information. If you are interested in seeing your/your student's own growth charts, your MNOHS counselor can share them with you.
