AP Advanced Chinese Language and Culture is designed to further develop students’ knowledge of the Chinese language and culture, and to provide students with varied and ongoing opportunities to enhance their proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in the Chinese language. The primary goal of this course is to guide the students toward mastering the conventions of communication through exploring various topics that reflect multiple aspects of Chinese society and culture.

This course aims to help the students (1) develop communicative competence in listening, speaking, reading and writing skills; (2) understand the reading materials and participate in discussion of the cultural aspects of the readings in Chinese; (3) develop critical thinking and writing skills to compose essays in Chinese on given topics; (4) use the Chinese language to communicate effectively in real-life situations; (5) present information on culturally relevant topics in Chinese.

Students enrolled in this course will immerse in Chinese language and culture through a well-integrated curricular framework that emphasizes communicative skills. The activities are designed to provide students with maximum opportunities to use the three modes of communication (interpretive, interpersonal, presentational) for learning and assessment. The use of a variety of technology tools is expected. Homework assignments as well as active participation in Chinese synchronous class meetings (1-2 times per week) are required of this course. Students are expected to participate using the target language at all times. 

Students who complete both semesters will be prepared to take the AP Chinese Language and Culture exam, and are strongly encouraged to do so.

Course materials: Strive For a 5: AP Chinese Practice Tests (Cheng & Tsui, 2009), a print book, can be ordered from the MNOHS office. Additional materials are available week-by-week within the course.

Standards met: The course objectives are designed in alignment with National Foreign Language Standards as well as College Board AP Chinese requirements.

Credit: 1.0 (Semester A = 0.5 credit, Semester B = 0.5 credit.) Honors Opportunity: No

Prerequisites: ACTFL proficiency level Intermediate-High to Advanced.   It is highly recommended that students take two years of Advanced Chinese (Levels 1 and 2) before taking this course or the AP exam.  Completion of the A course is a prerequisite for enrolling in the B course.
