Weekly Virtual Class Meeting: None

Time Commitment: 5 – 8 well-focused hours per week

Attendance: Simply logging in to your courses does not count as attending. Attendance is based on submitting assignments and is taken on a weekly basis. Submit all of your work by the weekly due date to be marked with good attendance.

Prerequisites: Algebra 1.5 or its equivalent must be taken prior to this course. Chemistry and Technology must be taken before the other three quarters. After passing Chemistry and Technology, the other three quarters of the course can be taken in any sequence.

Credit: .25 credit per quarter

Terms: This course is four quarters in length

Course materials: Required videos and readings are available within the courses.

Standards met: Taken together these four courses meet all Chemistry standards and benchmarks of the 2019 Minnesota Science Standards for Grades 9-12.

Honors Opportunity: Yes

Chemistry helps us to make sense of the world we live in—from why soap cleans greasy plates to whether or not biofuels are a beneficial energy path. At MNOHS, the Minnesota physical science graduation requirement can be met by taking the four quarte-length chemistry topics courses described below.

Chemistry and Technology must be taken first. It is the prerequisite for the other three courses, which can be taken in any sequence.

Chemistry and Technology

How do we use chemistry in everyday technologies? How do scientists and engineers determine what materials are best for different uses?  In this 8-week course you will learn about the atom, properties of atoms, and the periodic table. You will apply this knowledge to understanding nuclear chemistry, building materials and the energy sources that power our lives.

Chemistry in the Body

All matter is made up of atoms, including our own bodies! In this 8-week course you will study vitamins and minerals to learn about chemical bonds. You will explore chemical reactions that our body uses every day. In the end, you will be able to describe how a firework and a person are chemically similar and how they are different.

Chemistry of Everyday Products

How does soap work if oil and water do not mix?  In this 8-week course you will dive into the chemistry behind soaps, lotions, and cleaners. Chemistry concepts that help us to understand the action of these products include emulsions, acids and bases. We will also anakyze a product we often forget: the plastics that hold all the other products!

Chemistry in the Environment

Chemistry is all around us, even in the air we cannot see.  In this 8-week course you will learn about how chemistry plays a role in our environments. Density and heat transfer are one of the main reasons we have ocean and air currents.  Gases, one of the states of matter, play an important role in climate change. We end the quarter with a study of water quality.
