Project Based Learning (PBL)

(formerly known as Guided Study)

Project Based Learning is a quarter-length learning opportunity for students to explore a subject of their choice. They also have the flexibility to work on their projects for multiple quarters, as long as it fits into their schedule.

In PBL, students work with a guide (a MNOHS teacher) to gather data on their preferred subject, including career and community resources, while also meeting a selection of Minnesota Academic Standards. Students are encouraged to be creative when deciding on the final artifact medium, see examples below. This is a great option for students who are already committed to outside-of-school learning or who want to deepen their understanding of a particular skill or subject.

Recent projects have included:

  • Chemistry – Study the evidence on the effectiveness of herbal remedies
  • Computer Science – Use Javascript to build a simulated ecosystem
  • Entrepreneurship – Create a business plan for a hobby farm
  • Fashion Arts – Complete a community ed course, interview a designer, and create a visual dictionary of fashion history
  • Physics – Create a household’s renewable energy plan, with a focus on wind generators

For students to take PBL, they:

  • Must demonstrate that they can be successful at MNOHS by attaining passing grades for at least one quarter
  • Meet with Christie Allison, PBL Coordinator to fill out the Project Proposal. Book time with Christie Allison
  • Have defined some ideas for their project (can go over ideas in a meeting with Ms. Allison)

Supplemental students will also need approval from their home district school counselor in addition to the requirements listed above.

Also see Guided Study in Music and Advanced PE for more ways students can earn credit at MNOHS doing what they love.
